Funky Winkerbean

comics, criticism, media August 15th, 2006

I have loathed the strip for so long it’s not even funny. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Batiuk lives to kill or inure his characters (last week, he married off the amputee girlfriend to the high school coach thirty years her senior, and then gave everyone food poisoning, so they could hold the wedding in a fucking hospital),but the ongoing plot involving Les and Lisa, who’s already had a double mastectomy, saw her cancer go into remission, only to have it return is really really sad. I can’t make fun of this, other than to curse Tom Batiuk for coming up with this grim plot. Jesus Fucking Christ, dude: the comics are supposed to be funny, irrelevant, or chronicle the lives of super-heroes. They’re not supposed to send you falling into depression.

See what I mean? I don’t even LIKE these characters and I feel bad.
