Fred Hiatt Wants a War with Iran
Fred Hiatt calls for war with Iran, and bases his call on lies and half-truths that are easily debunked by anyone who knows how to use google.
IRAN’S REVOLUTIONARY Guard Corps is a sprawling organization involved in myriad activities, including guarding borders, pumping oil, operating ports, smuggling, manufacturing pharmaceuticals, building Iran’s nuclear program — and supplying the weapons that are killing a growing number of American soldiers in Iraq. According to the Pentagon, one-third of the U.S. troops who died in Iraq last month — 23 soldiers — were killed by “explosively formed penetrators,” sophisticated bombs supplied by Tehran.
But that’s not true. SOME of them may be made in Iran, but the Iraqis, who looted liberated munitions dumps across the country when the US disbanded the Army and banned Ba’athists from employment, make ‘em too. So says Juan Cole, who has a lot more expertise on Iraq than Fred Hiatt.
OLBERMANN: Yes, in 2005, the London paper, “The Independent,†reported that the bombs like these EFPs were in Iraq, but they didn‘t go through Tehran, even though that was the British claim at that point, but they went through Palestinian groups who had gotten technology from the IRA, and the IRA had gotten them in a botched sting operation from British security services.
Are the weapons that the Iraqi militias are getting more likely to be from Iran, or are they more likely to be from the West, and even, not directly, obviously, but could they be from the U.S. itself?
COLE: Well, the Sunni Arab guerilla groups get their weapons from all over. There were 200,000 tons of missing munitions in Iraq to begin with that they mined. Then the Iraqi government gets munitions from the United States, which corrupt soldiers and officials sell off on a lively black market. Recently, Lebanon has been importing black market arms from Iraq which originally came from the United States.
The AFP also finds “explosively formed penetrator”factories IN IRAQ. Fred Hiatt is a liar: he has no idea where these roadside bombs are coming from, but because he’s supported the war from the get-go, he is loathe to admit that his war is lost.
In effect, the Revolutionary Guard, a radical state within Iran’s Islamic state, is waging war against the United States and trying to kill as many American soldiers as possible.
This is the first time I have ever read that the Revolutionary Guard, part of Iran’s military, operates like state-within-a-state like Hezbollah. In fact, the only people using that language are member of the Bush administration and their allies. What Fred is doing here is taking talking points from a biased source and pretending the talking points are factual: you’ll notice he doesn’t provide a source for the accusation. He just makes it up out of thin air. I can do that too, watch: “Fred Hiatt is a child molester”. “Fred Hiatt rapes nuns.” See? Anyone can play!
What’s puzzling are the murmurs of disapproval from European diplomats and others who say they favor using diplomacy and economic pressure, rather than military action, to rein in Iran.
Gee Fred, maybe that’s because our military is TIED DOWN IN IRAQ and can’t respond to other threats? Gee Fred, ever think that an attack on Iran might BACKFIRE and cause the Shi’ite south to massively increase attacks on our bogged down troops? The ones that we’re running out of?
Iran has been unresponsive to extensive European deal-making efforts and hasn’t taken up a year-old U.S. offer of across-the-board negotiations in exchange for stopping its uranium enrichment.
Well duh, Fred: that’s because that’s not how you negotiate.
Face it Fred: you and your neo-con buddies thought you could start an easily-won war with Iraq which would bestow all sorts of political capital on the administration you support. Now that it’s blown up in your face, you can’t figure out how to get out of Iraq. So instead of admitting you royally fucked up you want to change the subject to Iran and maybe get folks excited about a new war.
The thing is, you can only sell a new war (or a new anything) when the previous model was successful. When your last model was the equivalent of the Ford Pinto crossed with the Corvair, no one’s buying anymore.
Just admit it Fred: you fucked up, and you fucked up badly. if you had any shame, any conscience, any dignity, you’d step down today and buy a rope.
You figure out what to do with it.
